Bioengineering is a discipline that uses engineering tools to solve biological problems. In healthcare, bioengineering develops therapeutic, diagnostic and rehabilitative solutions.
It is a multidisciplinary field, integrating concepts from biology, mechanics, thermodynamics and transport for the design, fabrication and development of devices that interact directly with biological entities such as molecules, cells, tissues and organs.
Examples of this integration are the new drug-eluting stents, bioactive prostheses, high-performance contrast agents, nanocarriers for the targeted and controlled administration of drugs.
Bioengineering students are trained in the fundamentals of both biology and engineering, which may include elements of chemical engineering, computer science, materials science, and mechanics. This breadth of knowledge enables students in their areas of interest and to collaborate with professionals and researchers working in related fields such as medicine, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals.
